Dock Road to Wrights lake

On a path, apparently popular with youth who go swimming in Wrights Lake, Nova Scotia, I captured this scene through the woods. There was a problem. After the blackflies siphoned my blood for a ½hour, I just had to back off and complete just my thumbnail sketches.

My intellectual challenge here was to simplify a wooded stand and brush, give the impression of chaos, highlight the play of light and think about design elements. I have tried several types of paper in Plein air. My favourite is Stonehenge Aqua, from New York, but this is becoming harder to find in stores.
