Some stables are just meant to be painted. This is one of them.

Exploring Kings County, Nova Scotia, brought us to Starr's Point -- farmland country in the Annapolis Valley. This horse stable was on the road leading to a cemetery in which celebrated artist Alex Colville is buried. I could have painted the grand house beside this barn but decided to leave that for another day. 

Because the picture plane was a square format and the barn was centred, portrait-like, I needed to add visual movement through the use of those diagonal shadows. I was first attracted here by those shadows cast across the right of the structure. I also added tension by only painting the right half of the barn and weighing the windows and tree to the right with the white façade to the left. I used artistic license by changing the colour of that façade to white. It is really red.
