Breaking Dawn in Gros Morne

"Breaking Dawn in Gros Morne" is a larger studio piece based on my smaller plein air watercolour sketch (5am in Gros Morne) created this summer in Newfoundland.

This is what it was like to get up at 5 a.m. at the Lomond Campground in Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland. The time before the sun appears over the horizon is magical. Birds begin to cry and sing. The air is still. Mountains and trees are silhouetted against the sky and lake.

We tented and painted in Grose Morne for a couple of weeks.

PS The air is rarely "still" in Newfoundland. We also painted while flags were stiff, at right angles to their flag poles.
